I have read several of C.S. Lewis’ books through the years but for some reason never got around to reading The Abolition of Man until recently. It is a fantastic little book (less than a 100 pages), and is prophetic in many ways as it tackles the subjects of subjectivism, ethics, and the myth of scientific progress. I highly recommend the book if you are looking for a challenge. It roused me from this liberal malaise I have been mired in the last several years. Nothing against liberals (I would still consider myself liberal) but there is a liberalism that is so lazy that it only defines itself as “not conservative” and it is this “anti-” for the sake of “anti-” that Lewis will not allow.
I will tease you with a quote on the subject of power through scientific progress-
“There neither is nor can be any simple increase of power on Man’s side. Each new power won by man is a power over man as well. Each advance leaves him weaker as well as stronger. In every victory, besides being the general who triumphs, he is also the prisoner who follows the triumphal car.”

Prosperity knits a man to the World. He feels he is “finding his place in it,” while really it is finding its place in him.

“Technology is the handmaiden of an anthropocentric church”
and
“What we have lost in the ascendancy of technique is the openness to mystery and the understanding of God’s own inscrutable work in our midst”

You could tell him what a terrible player he is and he’ll say, thank you, and still feel good about himself. He’s got a lot of confidence.
Joe Torre (speaking of James Loney)
It would seem Torre is not one for compliments or encouraging his players. First it was this gem in which Torre almost threw his back out trying to pick an opening day starter and now Torre reveals his true feelings about James Loney (who is the second best hitter on the Dodgers right now by the way).
Quote
We just had to pick somebody, and he was the one.
Joe Torre, on his selection of Vicente Padilla as the opening day starter for the Dodgers this season. How’s that for confidence?
Let me paraphrase: “We don’t have any guy who earned the job. If I could get away with not naming a starter, I would, but the rules of the game say you have to pick somebody, so Vicente is it.”
Who is ready for some Dodger baseball!!!???

Whatever man. Your monkey’s got something to hide just like the rest of us.

I feel that people who happen to be both artists and Christians need to make art from the center of their beings, art that is honest and real and glorifying to God all at the same time. Art that can vibrate to the chords of anyone’s hearts, despite what they profess to believe. Are we not all human, and is not art a bridge that crosses over otherwise unbridgeable chasms?

There’s a collective experience happening at a rock concert that I’ve always assumed would probably be what Church should be like, if Church was what it should be.

I have no use for cranks who despise music, because it is a gift of God. Music drives away the Devil and makes people gay; they forget thereby all wrath, unchastity, arrogance, and the like. Next after theology, I give to music the highest place and the greatest honor.
