Time for a Dodgers post

(Let me preface these thoughts by saying I am not an Angel fan.  I understand that at one point in time Garret Anderson was a star in the game of baseball, but that was for another team and at another time, and I have no sentimentality reserved for him or his former accomplishments.)

I read this today from Evan Drelich, Doyer beat-writer for MLB.com, and it made me chuckle.  The quote comes from an article titled “LA Unsure Where to go to Fill Roster” and it is about the need for the Doyers to call up another outfielder with Manny and Reed Johnson both on the DL.  The article mentions a couple of the role playing outfielders and their contributions, and when discussing Garret Anderson, Drelich had this to offer-

Torre has been beholden to Anderson more for his presence and intangibles than his on-field contribution. He’s batting .186. “

“Garret Anderson,” “intangibles,” and “presence” in the same sentence!  What presence is that?  The guy is present in the same way that a house plant is present, but I would not consider him a “presence.”  And if being old and grounding out to the pitcher every other at bat fall under the category of “intangibles” then by god Torre, you’ve got your man!

MLB.com offers an online application called Gameday through which you can “watch” the details of the game unfold (no streaming video, just an animated batter and pitch/play details), and they have jumped on the Twitter bandwagon by streaming tweets from fans of both sides playing the game in the lower right hand corner of the app.  You get a gem come across every once in awhile (Like when Joe Torre went to the bullpen for what seemed like the 10th time in the 8th inning last night and someone tweeted that he called for Scott Proctor and was shocked to find out he wasn’t on the team).  Anyway, this is a GA tweet from a few weeks back that I loved. RT* from a Doyer fan: Garret Anderson is to rallies what Birkenstocks are to sex appeal.

Brilliant.

*I assume that stands for ReTweet.  I don’t have a Twitter account and never will, but I will always have assumptions!
