My top 10 “Desert Island” albums - number 10

One of my favorite movies is High Fidelity starring John Cusack.  It is a great movie about music and relationships, and how they impact one another.  In the movie the guys that work at the record store, Rob, Barry and Dick, are often coming up with “top 5 lists”, which is something I find that a lot of guys like to do.  We like to rank and re-rank our pop-culture faves, whether it be movies, TV shows, or live concerts.

Well I decided that I want to attempt a top 10 “Desert Island” list of my favorite albums (for now).  The desert island phrase (which seems like an oxymoron if you ask me) comes from High Fidelity and it is a way to narrow down your selection.  If you were on a deserted island (which I think is what Rob meant by “desert island”), what 5 records would you want with you?  Well I couldn’t keep it to just 5 so here are my top 10.  I will dedicate a post to each and spread it out over a few days (or weeks) working up to number 1.

#10 Cush- Cush

“I remember holding your hand

for the first time

I remember the moon in your eyes

for the first time, for the first time.”  Crush Me- Cush

This selection is all about my love for Michael Knott.  He is a musician/painter who has been in too many bands to count (Aunt Bettys, Bombay Babies, Lifesavors Underground etc.) and has also recorded some great solo records.  If I had to pick just one Michael Knott project to have with me on the “desert island” it would be this Cush record (with his solo record, Life of David a very close second).  The album starts off with Heaven Sent, which has a really cool U2-esque, 2-minute plus instrumental intro that you wish would never end, but as soon as Mike Knott’s voice comes in you recognize that he has finally found the band that compliments his vocal style perfectly.

I am also a big fan of the song Crush Me, a tambourine-jangling love song that Mariah and I liked so much, we put it on our wedding cd that we gave as a gift to our guests.

Finally, I will always remember driving around San Diego with my friend Leslie, who I burned this cd for, and listening to the song Arching Heart on repeat as she dangerously got a little too overwhelmed while singing along with her hands raised in the air, instead of holding the steering wheel.

Unfortunately, this is the first and only Cush album that Mike Knott sang on, but it is brilliant and will definitely be with me on my deserted island.

Buy the record here- Amazon- Cush or on iTunes
